Subject Syllabus

Subject Overview

An integrated study of financial risk identification, measurement, governance and control, together with the valuation and use of derivative instruments. The subject connects quantitative theory, accounting treatment, regulation, technology and real-world risk decisions in financial and non-financial organizations.

Learning Goal

Students will be able to identify major financial and enterprise risks; apply quantitative risk models; value forwards, futures, options and swaps; design and evaluate hedging strategies; interpret hedge accounting and regulatory requirements; and make ethical, data-informed risk decisions using contemporary analytics and technology.

Syllabus

1. Foundations of Risk Management

Learning Objective: Explain risk, uncertainty, exposure, loss and opportunity; distinguish systematic and idiosyncratic risk; classify financial and non-financial risks; and understand the risk management cycle and the rationale for hedging.

Category: foundation

2. Enterprise Risk Governance and Frameworks

Learning Objective: Apply ISO 31000, COSO ERM and the Three Lines Model; define risk appetite, tolerance, limits and ownership; and evaluate board oversight, risk culture, controls, reporting and the role of the chief risk officer.

Category: core

3. Probability, Statistics and Financial Risk Analytics

Learning Objective: Use probability distributions, expected value, variance, covariance, correlation, regression, volatility estimation, time-series data and simulation while recognizing sampling, data-quality and model-risk limitations.

Category: core

4. Market Risk Measurement

Learning Objective: Measure interest-rate, foreign-exchange, equity and commodity exposures using sensitivity analysis, duration, convexity, beta, Value at Risk, Expected Shortfall, backtesting, stress testing and scenario analysis.

Category: core

5. Credit and Counterparty Risk

Learning Objective: Assess default probability, exposure at default, loss given default, expected and unexpected loss, credit ratings, migration, concentration, collateral, netting, wrong-way risk and credit portfolio models.

Category: core

6. Liquidity, Operational and Business Risk

Learning Objective: Evaluate funding and market liquidity, liquidity gaps, contingency funding, operational loss events, fraud, cyber risk, business continuity, conduct risk, reputational risk and key risk indicators.

Category: core

7. Derivative Markets, Instruments and Infrastructure

Learning Objective: Explain derivative terminology, exchange-traded and over-the-counter markets, contract specifications, participants, clearinghouses, margining, settlement, collateral, ISDA documentation and common derivative risks.

Category: foundation

8. Forwards and Futures

Learning Objective: Value forward and futures contracts using no-arbitrage and cost-of-carry principles; analyze basis and convergence; and apply contracts to hedge foreign-exchange, interest-rate, equity-index and commodity exposures.

Category: core

9. Options and Option Strategies

Learning Objective: Analyze calls, puts, payoff profiles, moneyness, put-call parity and major trading and hedging strategies, including protective puts, covered calls, spreads, straddles and collars.

Category: core

10. Option Valuation and Risk Sensitivities

Learning Objective: Apply binomial trees and the Black–Scholes–Merton model; interpret implied volatility and volatility smiles; calculate and use delta, gamma, theta, vega and rho; and evaluate model assumptions and limitations.

Category: advanced

11. Swaps and Credit Derivatives

Learning Objective: Value and apply interest-rate, currency, commodity and total-return swaps; explain credit default swaps; and assess comparative advantage, cash-flow transformation, counterparty exposure and termination risk.

Category: advanced

12. Hedging Strategy, Effectiveness and Decision-Making

Learning Objective: Design static and dynamic hedges; calculate optimal hedge ratios and hedge effectiveness; compare hedging, insurance and diversification; and evaluate basis risk, transaction costs, over-hedging and managerial trade-offs.

Category: application

13. Derivatives Accounting and Financial Reporting

Learning Objective: Apply the principles of fair-value measurement, recognition, presentation and disclosure for derivatives; distinguish fair-value, cash-flow and net-investment hedges; and evaluate hedge documentation and effectiveness under IFRS or relevant GAAP.
