Subject Syllabus

Subject Overview

An advanced study of ISO quality management systems, centred on ISO 9001 and supported by the ISO 9000 family. The subject integrates quality principles, process and risk-based thinking, implementation, auditing, certification, analytics, governance, strategic management and digitally enabled quality assurance.

Learning Goal

Enable students to design, implement, evaluate and strategically improve an ISO-conforming quality management system; interpret requirements in organizational context; make evidence-based managerial decisions; lead audits and certification initiatives; and critically assess digital, ethical and emerging developments in quality management.

Syllabus

1. Evolution and Architecture of ISO Quality Management Systems

Learning Objective: Examine the evolution of quality assurance, ISO, the ISO 9000 family and the role of ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9004 and related guidance standards. Distinguish standards, statutory requirements, accreditation, certification and organizational conformity.

2. Quality Management Principles and ISO Terminology

Learning Objective: Apply customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making and relationship management. Accurately use concepts such as quality, conformity, effectiveness, efficiency, risk, documented information, interested parties and organizational knowledge.

Category: foundation

3. Process Approach, Systems Thinking and PDCA

Learning Objective: Model an organization as an interacting system of processes using SIPOC, process maps, value streams, inputs, outputs, controls, responsibilities and performance indicators. Apply the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle across operational and managerial levels.

Category: core

4. Organizational Context, Interested Parties and QMS Scope

Category: core

7. Resources, Competence, Knowledge and Documented Information

Learning Objective: Plan people, infrastructure, work environment, monitoring resources and organizational knowledge. Develop competence and awareness systems and control policies, procedures, records, digital documents, retention, access, versioning and data integrity.

Category: core

8. Operational Planning and Control

Learning Objective: Design controls for customer requirements, product and service design, externally provided processes, production, service delivery, release, traceability, preservation and nonconforming outputs. Apply supplier qualification, outsourced-process control and lifecycle thinking.

Category: application

9. Measurement, Quality Analytics and Performance Evaluation

Learning Objective: Develop KPIs and dashboards aligned with strategy and process objectives. Apply customer satisfaction measurement, cost of quality, measurement-system analysis, sampling, statistical process control, capability analysis and trend analysis to support evidence-based decisions.

Category: advanced

10. Nonconformity, Root-Cause Analysis and Continual Improvement

Learning Objective: Manage correction, containment, corrective action and effectiveness verification. Apply Pareto analysis, five whys, fishbone diagrams, fault-tree thinking, CAPA, lessons learned, Kaizen and structured improvement methods while distinguishing correction, corrective action and preventive risk controls.

Category: core

11. QMS Design, Implementation and Organizational Change

Address resistance, maturity, scalability and alignment between quality strategy and business objectives through case analysis.

Category: application

12. Internal Auditing and Management Review

Learning Objective: Plan and conduct risk-based audit programmes using ISO 19011 principles, including auditor competence, independence, sampling, interviewing, evidence evaluation, findings and follow-up. Design management reviews that convert performance evidence into strategic decisions and actions.

Category: advanced

13. Certification, Accreditation and External Assurance

Learning Objective: Explain certification cycles, stage-one and stage-two audits, surveillance, recertification and the roles of certification and accreditation bodies under relevant conformity-assessment frameworks. Prepare organizations for external, supplier, customer, remote and hybrid audits.
